Best links for walking in the Wakatipu

Reading Time: 3 minutes

DOC (The Department of Conservation) are our national authority on walking advice, campsites and huts, weather forecasts, track conditions.   Below are the key DOC links for walking in the Wakatipu Basin (Queenstown) which will provide a good overview.  We highly recommend chatting to, or visiting, the DOC Queenstown Visitor centre prior to any missions.    DOC will assist you to book hut tickets and to book NZ Great Walks, like the famous The Routeburn Track.

We’ve also provided links to weather forecast for our local National Parks, and the website to book any commercial walks or transport to tracks.

  • The Wakatipu Walks Brochure – The region’s best overview of 43 walking/riding options in the Wakatipu.   Duration from 15 minutes to full day.
  • The DOC maps tool provides more in-depth information on each track, plus downloadable PDFs of track terrain and biodiversity.
  • We work with local people who offer guided tours, or organised transport to the start of a track and back again – check out Queenstown Hikes for local day walks and Info & Track to connect further afield or contact our local concierge team today.
