Performed by Remarkable Theatre Queenstown
10-13 & 17-19 September
Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall
Remarkables Theatre is a community group that aims to promote and develop Central Otago performing arts, and to encourage the development of acting and performance skills in our local people.
The theatre has three annual shows:
Pint Size Plays (May) – top entries of a short playwriting competition are performed where the audience decides the winner.
Major Spring Performance (September) – this is the annual showpiece
Promenade Summer Show (Summer) – free show performed at the Queenstown Gardens
This spring Remarkables Theatre Queenstown is performing Cosi, a Louis Nowra play. Directed by Blaise Barham, a local star studded cast and ensemble will take the stage in Arrowtown.
“Nowra’s vibrant play is set inside a mental health institution in Melbourne in 1971.
Lewis, a young director, takes on the task of mounting a production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in the burnt-out theatre. He becomes emotionally involved with his patients-cum-actors as his operatic production lurches forward and anti-Vietnam protests rage outside.
The icing on the cake is that it’s all based on playwright Louis Nowra’s own life. In the 1970s, he himself directed a musical with patients from Melbourne’s Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital. The one-off performance brought joy to everyone involved.
First produced in 1992, COSI has become one of the most successful Australian plays produced in the last two decades. A terrific play about madness, illusion, sanity… and theatre.”
If you are visiting in summer, be sure to visit the Queenstown Gardens, you might just be lucky to see a free promenade show by Remarkables Theatre.
